Enviro News Asia, Semarang — Climate change is becoming an increasingly urgent global issue, with rising temperatures and extreme weather events affecting communities worldwide. Experts warn that human activities—particularly industrialization—are among the main drivers of environmental degradation and greenhouse gas emissions.
Speaking in Semarang on 8 March, Bimastyaji Surya Ramadan, a lecturer in the Environmental Engineering Department at Diponegoro University, explained that the industrial sector remains one of the largest contributors to global carbon emissions.
According to him, emissions generated by industrial activities directly affect the environment, including worsening air quality and accelerating global warming.
Indonesia, which is currently pushing for stronger industrial development, faces significant environmental risks if the impacts of industrial expansion are not carefully managed.
“Industrial activities are growing rapidly in Indonesia. If they are not properly controlled, the consequences will ultimately affect us, one of which is increasingly unpredictable climate change,” Bimastyaji said.
To address these concerns, the government has introduced several environmental oversight mechanisms, including the PROPER (Public Disclosure Program for Environmental Compliance). The program requires companies to take responsibility for their environmental impacts while also encouraging initiatives such as community empowerment in areas affected by industrial activities.
However, Bimastyaji emphasized that strict enforcement must be balanced with economic considerations. Many communities depend on industries for employment and income, meaning sudden closures of non-compliant companies could create social and economic challenges.
“Communities earn their livelihoods from industries. When companies violate regulations, the government cannot simply shut them down immediately, because that could lead to job losses and social unrest,” he explained.
He also highlighted that addressing climate change is not solely the responsibility of industries or governments. Public awareness and participation are equally important in slowing environmental damage.
Bimastyaji encouraged individuals to adopt environmentally friendly habits, such as practicing a greener lifestyle, which can collectively help reduce the impacts of climate change.
“People who are aware of environmental issues and climate change can take many actions, including adopting a green lifestyle. Even small contributions can help reduce the impacts of climate change,” he concluded. (*)
