Indonesia and Japan Accelerate Energy and Mineral Cooperation for Strategic Projects

Enviro News Asia, Tokyo — The Government of Indonesia is accelerating the implementation of energy and mineral sector cooperation with Japan as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral strategic partnership. This was conveyed by Bahlil Lahadalia after accompanying Prabowo Subianto in a bilateral meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister in Tokyo.

The government emphasized that the meeting serves as a critical momentum to ensure that previously signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) are promptly translated into concrete projects, particularly in energy development, downstream industrialization, and renewable energy.

Bahlil stated that the cooperation includes the development of natural gas, geothermal energy, and collaboration on critical minerals, which are key priorities in Indonesia’s economic transformation. The government will continue to oversee the implementation of all agreements to ensure timely and effective execution.

He also highlighted the involvement of Japanese companies in Indonesia’s national strategic projects, including investment by INPEX Corporation in the Masela Block gas project, which is expected to advance in the near future.

During the meeting, President Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Japan across strategic sectors, including energy, minerals, and industrial downstreaming. He also expressed openness to collaboration in renewable energy and nuclear energy development as part of Indonesia’s energy transition agenda.

The President further invited Japan to actively participate in Indonesia’s economic development, particularly in critical minerals and value-added industrialization to enhance the competitiveness of national resources.

The bilateral meeting forms part of the President’s official visit to Japan, aimed at strengthening economic and energy cooperation while accelerating Indonesia’s transition toward a more sustainable and value-added energy system. (*)
