Indonesia and South Korea Strengthen Strategic Partnership Through Three Energy Agreements

Enviro News Asia, Seoul — Indonesia and South Korea have reinforced their strategic partnership in the energy and mineral sectors following the signing of three bilateral agreements aimed at addressing global energy challenges and accelerating the transition toward sustainable energy systems.

Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, signed the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Government of South Korea at the Blue House in Seoul. The signing ceremony was witnessed by President Prabowo Subianto and President Lee Jae Myung.

The agreements include cooperation in clean energy development, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and critical minerals. These partnerships are expected to strengthen both countries’ capacity to respond to potential disruptions in global energy supply, particularly amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Minister Bahlil emphasized that the agreements mark a significant step in enhancing bilateral cooperation in addressing future energy risks. He noted that the collaboration would cover a wide range of areas, including renewable energy, nuclear power, hydrogen development, energy storage systems, and smart grid technology.

In the clean energy sector, both countries agreed to promote technology transfer, increase investment, and support human resource development. The cooperation also includes the development of bioenergy, waste-to-energy systems, electric vehicle infrastructure, and integrated energy systems for remote and independent islands.

Meanwhile, the CCS agreement is expected to facilitate cross-border carbon storage initiatives, promote commercialization of carbon capture technologies, and support joint research projects in industrial applications.

In the critical minerals sector, Indonesia and South Korea will collaborate on geoscience surveys, mineral processing and refining, recycling, environmental standards, and post-mining rehabilitation. The partnership also aims to enhance cooperation between public and private sectors while boosting trade and investment in critical mineral projects.

President Prabowo expressed Indonesia’s commitment to elevating bilateral relations with South Korea into a more comprehensive strategic partnership. He encouraged both countries’ ministers to accelerate the implementation of agreed initiatives.

President Lee also reaffirmed South Korea’s commitment to strengthening ties with Indonesia, highlighting that the partnership represents a unique and high-level strategic relationship.

The agreements underscore Indonesia’s proactive role in energy diplomacy and its efforts to build resilient, sustainable, and forward-looking energy systems. (*)
