Enviro News Asia, Beijing – Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for all-out efforts in organizing flood emergency rescue, disaster relief, treatment of the injured, and resettlement of affected people after multiple regions were hit by severe flooding, urging authorities to minimize casualties and prevent secondary disasters.
Xi issued the instructions after heavy rains and gale-force winds triggered a series of disasters, including a reservoir breach and landslides in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and Hubei and Gansu provinces, resulting in heavy casualties and economic losses.
Calling on local governments and relevant departments to fully implement flood control measures, Xi demanded specific efforts to inspect, identify, and eliminate risks and hazards in rivers and lakes, dilapidated reservoirs, and areas prone to geological disasters. He also stressed the need to strengthen monitoring, early warning, and emergency preparedness to ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.
Premier Li Qiang also urged strengthened measures to closely monitor rain and flood conditions, enhance hazard detection and early warning systems, and carry out emergency rescue and relief with maximum effort. (*)
