Central Java Provincial Government Proposes Muria Forest as a Grand Forest Park

Enviro News Asia, Semarang – The Central Java Provincial Government has proposed designating Muria Forest as a Grand Forest Park (Tahura) to the Minister of Forestry. With this proposal, conservation efforts will be carried out in Muria Forest. These conservation efforts will not only focus on protecting and preserving the forest environment but also on safeguarding its flora and fauna.

The proposal was submitted because, to date, Central Java has only one Grand Forest Park, which is located in KGPAA Mangkunagoro I, Karanganyar Regency.

“Human life is inseparable from the condition of the surrounding environment. Therefore, we must work together to protect nature. That is why we have proposed Muria Forest to become Muria Grand Forest Park,” said Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi, S.H., during a meeting with representatives from Djarum Foundation at his office on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

According to an official statement from the Central Java Provincial Government, if the proposal is approved, Muria Forest—located in the Muria Mountains and covering areas in Kudus, Pati, and Jepara Regencies—could be utilized to preserve biodiversity as well as support research and education initiatives.

Head of the Central Java Environmental and Forestry Office (DLHK), Widi Hartanto, stated that the establishment of Muria Grand Forest Park is crucial in supporting the government’s efforts to conserve the forest and its environment. He mentioned that several rare animal species still inhabit and reproduce in the forest, making it essential to monitor the food chain. Widi Hartanto believes that if Muria Forest is designated as a Grand Forest Park, its management will be better preserved.

“The benefits of Muria Grand Forest Park lie in conservation efforts. Proper management is essential, and empowering the surrounding communities is also important. However, to achieve this, support from other stakeholders is needed,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Program Director of Bakti Lingkungan Djarum Foundation, Jemmy Chayadi, expressed his strong support for designating Muria Forest as a Grand Forest Park. He views Muria Forest as a “home” for various flora and fauna.

“This proposal to establish Muria Grand Forest Park is an excellent initiative. We are ready to support the government in protecting Muria Forest,” said Jemmy.
