Enviro News Asia, Beijing — Chinese Premier Li Qiang has urged the advancement of high-quality farmland development to strengthen food security and accelerate agricultural modernization across China.
His remarks were conveyed on Friday during a national video conference focusing on the construction of high-standard farmlands and farmland water conservancy projects for the winter-spring season.
Li noted that China has made notable progress in expanding farmland infrastructure and water conservancy systems in recent years, which has supported consecutive bumper harvests and contributed to farmers’ income growth.
The premier, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized the importance of “storing grain both in land and in technology.” He called for the full implementation of the latest national initiatives to boost grain production capacity.
He also underscored the need to restore farmland ditches, enhance flood control systems in certain plains, and strengthen disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities within the agricultural sector.
Li instructed local governments to ensure strict project management, maintain construction quality, and supervise funding effectively to attract the participation of farmers and the general public.
Vice Premier Liu Guozhong, who also addressed the meeting, called for enhanced comprehensive agricultural production and better disaster prevention strategies. He encouraged coordinated planning for autumn and winter sowing to ensure stable food supplies and lay a solid foundation for the development of a strong agricultural sector. (*)
