Enviro News Asia, Belem — Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang on Thursday urged the international community to work together in advancing the protection and sustainable management of tropical rainforests.
Speaking in Belem, Brazil, as Chinese President Xi Jinping’s special representative, Ding made the remarks during a luncheon hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for the “Tropical Forests Forever Facility” fund.
Ding, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, reaffirmed President Xi’s call for strict rainforest protection, ecological preservation, green development, and the enhancement of people’s well-being through coordinated efforts.
He highlighted that China has made notable progress in tropical rainforest protection by strengthening environmental policies, increasing financial and technological support, and establishing the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park — achieving tangible results in both ecological and local economic development.
Ding stressed that safeguarding tropical rainforests is vital for the survival and well-being of humanity, emphasizing that collective global action is essential to this shared cause. He proposed building multilateral and bilateral cooperation platforms to enhance communication, coordination, and joint initiatives in rainforest protection.
He also urged developed nations to provide sufficient financial assistance to developing countries under the framework of the United Nations climate convention to reduce deforestation and mitigate rainforest degradation. Ding added that China stands ready to deepen cooperation with all parties to contribute further to global climate and environmental governance.
The event was attended by several world leaders, including President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, President Jennifer Simons of Suriname, President Gustavo Petro of Colombia, French President Emmanuel Macron, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, who also delivered remarks.
