Enviro News Asia, Sekadau – Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry, through the Sustainable Forest Management Agency (BPHL) Region X Pontianak, is strengthening capacity-building efforts for Forest Management Technical Personnel (Ganis PH) as part of efforts to improve forestry human resources and ensure the implementation of sustainable forest management at the field level.
The field-based assistance is part of the implementation of Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni’s directive to strengthen bottom-up capacity building and reinforce the role of technical personnel as the frontline of forest governance. The minister has emphasized the importance of transparent, accountable, and highly integrated forest governance by ensuring that all permits and forest utilization operations comply with applicable regulations.
Under this approach, the Ministry of Forestry is not only strengthening its supervisory functions but also promoting collaboration and continuous capacity building to enable businesses and forestry technical personnel to work together in maintaining forest sustainability.
The commitment was demonstrated through a field training and assistance program for Ganis PH personnel at PT Wana Subur Persada, a holder of a Forest Utilization Business License (PBPH) in Sekadau Regency, West Kalimantan, on Thursday (August 6).
The program was conducted by the BPHL Region X Pontianak team through technical assistance, capacity building, and discussions on the implementation of forestry regulations and various challenges encountered in field operations.
Acting Head of BPHL Region X Pontianak Irwan Instanto Purwadi Damaryono emphasized that every field assignment undertaken by BPHL should provide added value through guidance and capacity building for businesses and forestry technical personnel.
“Every BPHL field assignment is an opportunity to provide assistance, strengthen capacity, and ensure that technical requirements are properly implemented. Direct guidance at the workplace provides more practical benefits because various challenges can be addressed based on actual field conditions,” Irwan said.
He explained that the approach forms part of a continuous capacity-building strategy to ensure that Ganis PH personnel not only understand forestry regulations and technical standards but are also able to apply them appropriately in forest management activities.
Plantation Manager of PT Wana Subur Persada Sandhi Fernando welcomed the assistance as a form of government support to improve the quality of forest management practices.
“We believe that field assistance can strengthen the professionalism of Ganis PH personnel while improving compliance with applicable forestry regulations,” Sandhi said.
Through the field assistance program, BPHL Region X Pontianak also strengthened communication and coordination with PBPH holders. Direct dialogue serves as a mechanism to evaluate ongoing activities and provide continuous guidance for improvement based on actual conditions in the field.
“An integrated approach combining supervision, monitoring, evaluation, and field assistance is expected to serve as an effective learning platform for Ganis PH personnel. This will help develop professional, competent, and adaptive technical personnel capable of supporting sustainable, responsible, and accountable forest management,” Irwan concluded.
The Ministry of Forestry said continued field-based assistance would remain an important component of efforts to strengthen forestry governance and improve the competence of technical personnel responsible for forest management at the operational level. (*)
