Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources(ESDM) is accelerating the development of waste-to-energy (WtE) projects as a strategic response to the country’s growing waste crisis and increasing energy demand.
During a visit to the TPA Benowo facility, Deputy Minister Yuliot highlighted that urban waste management has become a national priority following directives from President Prabowo Subianto.
The government is targeting the construction of 34 Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Sampah (PLTSa) projects across 34 cities between 2026 and 2027. This initiative is supported by Presidential Regulation No. 109/2025, which aims to accelerate environmentally friendly waste processing into renewable energy.
The Benowo facility, operated by PT Sumber Organik, processes up to 1,600 tons of waste per day, including both newly generated and accumulated landfill waste. The site has become a benchmark for integrated waste management by converting waste into electricity.
In addition, a waste-to-fuel facility developed by PT Prakarsa Energi Sejahtera is currently under construction at the site. The plant will use pyrolysis technology to convert plastic waste into renewable diesel fuel, with an estimated production capacity of 60–70 kiloliters per day.
With landfill capacity projected to reach critical levels by 2028, the government is positioning waste-to-energy solutions as a key pillar in addressing environmental challenges while supporting sustainable energy production. (*)
