Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Indonesia and China have reinforced their bilateral partnership to accelerate climate action, promote a just clean energy transition, and advance sustainable green development. The commitment was reaffirmed during an official meeting between Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH), Moh Jumhur Hidayat, and China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Liu Zhenmin, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Jakarta.
The meeting marked a significant step in strengthening the two countries’ strategic cooperation, positioning environmental protection as a key driver of economic growth and public welfare. It also followed the commitment made by the leaders of both countries to elevate environmental cooperation and green development as central pillars of Indonesia–China bilateral relations.
In his remarks, Minister Jumhur emphasized that developing countries have a vital role in addressing climate change while sustaining economic development.
“Indonesia believes that environmental protection is not a burden to development but the foundation of sustainable economic growth. Through our Growth through Environmental Protection approach, we seek to build prosperity by safeguarding the environment while ensuring that the benefits of the green economy are shared equitably across society,” Jumhur said.
He explained that Indonesia is advancing a new climate policy framework that integrates climate mitigation, adaptation, and public welfare as the three pillars of national climate action. The approach is supported by the development of carbon markets, biodiversity credits, equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms, and the implementation of climate justice principles.
Responding to Indonesia’s commitment, China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Liu Zhenmin, expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s leadership and reaffirmed China’s readiness to deepen practical cooperation across multiple sectors.
“China regards Indonesia as one of its most important strategic partners in ASEAN and among developing countries. We are ready to expand practical cooperation in climate change, clean energy, green technology, disaster early warning systems, circular economy development, and environmental protection, while jointly safeguarding the interests of developing countries in global climate governance,” Liu said.
During the meeting, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation through several key initiatives aimed at accelerating the green transition.
The first priority focuses on promoting a just clean energy transition by increasing investment in renewable energy, developing battery-based electric vehicle ecosystems, expanding the solar panel industry, and strengthening green industrial supply chains tailored to national conditions.
The second area of cooperation covers environmental innovation and technology, including the development of satellite- and artificial intelligence-based disaster early warning systems, tropical rainforest conservation, waste-to-energy technologies, and biodiversity protection.
Indonesia and China also agreed to expand collaboration in capacity building by supporting joint research, knowledge exchange, and workforce training to prepare skilled professionals for the growing green economy.
In addition, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening solidarity among developing nations ahead of upcoming international climate negotiations. They agreed to uphold the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities (CBDR) while encouraging developed countries to fulfill their commitments on climate finance and technology transfer.
Concluding the meeting, Minister Jumhur emphasized that bilateral cooperation should continue to generate practical and measurable benefits for both countries.
“The relationship between Indonesia and China has evolved into a mutually beneficial strategic partnership. Going forward, we expect this cooperation to become increasingly action-oriented through green investment, technological innovation, technology transfer, and capacity building, ultimately delivering tangible benefits for the people of both countries while contributing to the achievement of global sustainable development goals,” he said.
The meeting underscores the growing commitment of Indonesia and China to strengthening regional and global cooperation in addressing climate change while fostering sustainable economic growth, environmental protection, and social prosperity. (*)
