Indonesia Launches GHES 2026 to Accelerate Green Hydrogen Development

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Vice Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot officially launched the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES) 2026 on Tuesday (February 10), underscoring hydrogen’s strategic role in Indonesia’s energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources.

Yuliot emphasized that hydrogen serves as a zero-carbon energy carrier alongside electricity and will play a crucial role in achieving Indonesia’s long-term climate targets.

“The Government of Indonesia remains committed to climate change mitigation. In the long term, Indonesia aims to gradually reduce the share of fossil energy utilization as part of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or sooner. One of the key measures is the designation of hydrogen and ammonia as New Energy Sources,” Yuliot stated.

Currently, hydrogen utilization in Indonesia is concentrated in the industrial sector, particularly as a feedstock for fertilizer production. National hydrogen consumption stands at approximately 1.75 million tons per year, primarily used for urea production (88 percent), ammonia (4 percent), and oil refining (2 percent).

Yuliot further explained that hydrogen has strong potential to support decarbonization in hard-to-abate sectors, including long-distance transportation, maritime shipping, aviation, steel manufacturing, and industrial heating processes.

He noted that Indonesia holds significant potential to develop hydrogen and ammonia as integral components of its national energy transition agenda, while contributing to global energy system decarbonization. This vision aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to accelerate the large-scale deployment of new and renewable energy.

Indonesia’s strong foundational assets—including abundant renewable energy resources, firm commitment to global climate mitigation, and its strategic geographic position along major international trade routes—position the country to become a hydrogen and ammonia hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

In relation to hydrogen development efforts, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) Eniya Listiani Dewi revealed that the Ministry has formulated a National Hydrogen Roadmap aligned with industry action plans and commitments.

“In 2026, EBTKE will introduce an additional Key Performance Indicator focusing on green hydrogen achievement. We expect green hydrogen production to increase in line with the National Energy Plan. The target for 2026 is to exceed 199 tons per year,” Eniya explained.

The launch of GHES 2026 is expected to strengthen coordination among the government, industry players, and other stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen and support Indonesia’s energy transition. (*)
