Indonesia–UK Reinforce Global Climate Leadership, Strengthen National Resilience After COP30

Enviro News Asia, London — Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening global climate leadership through strategic cooperation with the United Kingdom following the outcomes of COP30 in Belém, Brazil. A bilateral meeting between Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH), Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, and the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for Climate, Rachel Kyte, marked an important moment to ensure that global commitments translate into concrete actions with tangible benefits for communities and ecosystems.

Minister Hanif stated that, from Indonesia’s perspective, the outcomes of COP30 have yet to deliver the level of collective progress demanded by the climate crisis. He underscored the need for more concrete advances in climate finance—particularly for adaptation and for loss and damage—alongside stronger operational guidance for implementation. The statement reinforced Indonesia’s position as a critical voice urging the international community to maintain momentum toward safeguarding the 1.5°C goal amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

The urgency of strengthened cooperation is reflected in recent domestic challenges. Minister Hanif noted that recent hydrometeorological disasters in Sumatra have been devastating, with more than 1,000 lives lost due to floods and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, hundreds reported missing, and hundreds of thousands displaced. According to data from BNPB, economic losses exceeded USD 3.1 billion, underscoring the pressing need to reinforce climate risk analysis, early warning systems, and national preparedness capacity.

Indonesia emphasized the central role of nature-based solutions (NbS) in addressing climate risks. Minister Hanif highlighted that NbS were prominently discussed at COP30 due to their multiple benefits for adaptation, mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and community resilience. Indonesia is committed to scaling up NbS approaches; however, doing so requires stronger technical capacity, robust data, and reliable financing mechanisms to ensure integrity and long-term impact.

The meeting also reaffirmed the strong foundation of bilateral cooperation. Minister Hanif pointed to the Memorandum of Understanding with the UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) as a solid platform for advancing concrete follow-up actions. Indonesia’s priorities include strengthening high-integrity carbon systems, enhancing climate information and early warning systems, expanding access to high-resolution spatial data, and developing rapid assessment tools for landscape resilience.

Concluding the meeting, Minister Hanif stressed that this moment must be seized to convert shared commitments into practical, technical collaboration. The bilateral engagement reaffirmed the joint determination of Indonesia and the United Kingdom to uphold global climate leadership, strengthen national resilience, and ensure that international commitments deliver real-world benefits for people and the environment.

Note: The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) is the UK government department responsible for advancing the green economy and delivering a secure, affordable energy system. Its mandate includes meeting the UK’s legally binding net-zero commitments while driving sustainable economic growth through accelerated investment in domestic energy infrastructure and emerging green industries.
