Enviro News Asia, Tokyo – The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) of Japan on December 5, 2025 announced the selection of a new project under the Subsidy Programme for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) Facility Introduction for FY2025 to FY2027. The decision followed a multi-stage evaluation process conducted by the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC), which handled the screening of applications submitted between April 7 and September 30, 2025.
MOE Japan selected a project in Chile that introduces a 14MW solar power plant and a 40MWh battery storage system in Chile’s O’Higgins and Maule Regions. The project, implemented by Farmland Co., Ltd., is estimated to reduce 10,310 tons of CO₂ per year by supplying renewable energy and storing excess electricity for nighttime use. Japan will support the project through a subsidy covering up to half of the initial investment.
Japan has operated the JCM since 2013 and established partnerships with 31 countries, enabling the approval of more than 270 decarbonization projects. Through the mechanism, Japan promotes the deployment of advanced low-carbon technologies to partner countries while contributing to their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The selected projects avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) double counting through internationally recognized corresponding adjustments.
Under the JCM framework, Japan continues to facilitate the dissemination of technologies such as solar power, storage batteries, efficient turbines, and geothermal systems. MOE Japan emphasized that the subsidy programme aims to accelerate real-world emission reductions by expanding clean infrastructure and strengthening monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems in partner countries.
Japan’s previous JCM selections for FY2025 include projects in Georgia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Cambodia, collectively projected to cut emissions by more than 95,000 tons of CO₂ annually. These projects range from utility-scale solar power systems to geothermal-linked turbine upgrades and large-capacity battery storage installations.
MOE Japan stated that it will continue coordinating with partner governments and local implementers to finalize contract procedures and ensure timely construction and operation of facilities. The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to advancing global decarbonization pathways through the promotion of high-efficiency Japanese technologies abroad.
