Enviro News Asia, Kuala Lumpur – Kuala Lumpur is set to take center stage as Malaysia, in its capacity as ASEAN Chair, hosts the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits from 26 to 28 October 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). Guided by the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” this year’s summit will gather regional and global leaders to strengthen cooperation toward a more integrated, resilient, and sustainable Southeast Asia.
The series of meetings will include the ASEAN Summit, ASEAN Plus One Summits with seven Dialogue Partners (Australia, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Russia, and the United States), the ASEAN Plus Three Summit, the East Asia Summit, the ASEAN–United Nations Summit, and the ASEAN–New Zealand Commemorative Summit, which marks the 50th anniversary of ASEAN–New Zealand dialogue relations.
Malaysia will also convene the Fifth Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit and the Third Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Leaders Meeting on the sidelines of the main events.
The opening ceremony on 26 October 2025 will be attended by all ASEAN Leaders, including the President and Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, along with other invited guests. During the ceremony, the Declaration on the Admission of Timor-Leste into ASEAN will be signed, officially recognizing the nation as ASEAN’s eleventh Member State.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim will chair the 47th ASEAN Summit, which will feature Plenary and Retreat sessions. The Plenary Session will focus on advancing ASEAN Community-building, deepening regional integration, promoting economic growth, and enhancing connectivity. Leaders will also discuss ASEAN’s unity and centrality within an evolving global geopolitical landscape, reaffirming their commitment to a rules-based multilateral order.
Guests of the ASEAN Chair, including the Prime Minister of Canada, the President of the European Council, and the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), are expected to share their perspectives on strengthening ASEAN’s dialogue relations and discuss global macroeconomic trends affecting the region.
During the Retreat Session, ASEAN Leaders will review the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar and deliberate on collective measures to address the ongoing political and humanitarian situation in the country. They will also exchange views on pressing regional and international issues of shared concern.
Throughout the three-day program, the ASEAN Plus One Summits will highlight cooperation in trade and investment, supply chain resilience, digitalization, renewable energy, green growth, and other emerging challenges. The ASEAN–New Zealand Commemorative Summit will mark a milestone with the anticipated announcement of the ASEAN–New Zealand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).
The 20th East Asia Summit will gather all 19 participants, including ASEAN Member States, Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Russia, and the United States. The discussions will focus on strategic, political, and economic issues to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in East Asia. Guests of the ASEAN Chair, including the Presidents of Brazil and South Africa, will attend in their capacities as Chairs of BRICS and the G20 respectively.
The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits represent the culmination of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025 before handing over the role to the Philippines on 1 January 2026. The formal handover ceremony will take place on 28 October 2025, marking the conclusion of a pivotal year in regional diplomacy and cooperation.
According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 47th ASEAN Summit underscores Malaysia’s steadfast commitment to advancing regional integration and realizing ASEAN’s shared vision of peace, stability, and prosperity.
