Minister of Environment Plants 257 Endemic Trees at TMII

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — The Ministry of Environment reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Indonesia’s biodiversity by planting 257 endemic plant seedlings at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Jakarta, on Friday (28 November 2025). The activity, led directly by Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, is part of efforts to strengthen green open spaces while improving environmental quality in urban areas.

A total of 34 species of Indonesian endemic plants were planted during the event. These plants were selected for their crucial ecological roles, ranging from improving air quality and maintaining groundwater reserves to enhancing ecological resilience increasingly pressured by climate change and rapid urbanization.

In his statement, Hanif emphasized that the preservation of endemic plants is a fundamental pillar of Indonesia’s environmental sustainability.
“Endemic plants are Indonesia’s ecological strength,” Hanif said. “Efforts to protect and plant them not only safeguard today’s environment but also secure the future of generations to come.”

The initiative also represents cross-sector collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, PT Pertamina (Persero), TMII management, and environmental communities. This collaboration is expected to strengthen sustainable environmental management practices and serve as a model of partnership for national ecosystem restoration.

TMII President Director Ratri Paramita stated that the planting of endemic species aligns with TMII’s management direction, which places green spaces as its core identity.
“Tree-planting activities like this have become routine at TMII,” Ratri said. “With an area of 150 hectares, approximately 70 percent of TMII consists of green open spaces. This is part of our effort to reduce emissions and maintain environmental quality.”

PT Pertamina (Persero) also provided full support through its corporate environmental responsibility programs. Pertamina Senior Vice President of HSSE, Ade Gunawan, stressed that the company’s involvement is a direct contribution to strengthening national ecosystems.
“The presence of endemic trees supports clean air and reduces disaster risks such as floods and landslides,” Ade said.

The Ministry underscored that this program is not merely ceremonial but part of a long-term strategy for ecosystem rehabilitation and biodiversity protection. Through this initiative, Indonesia once again demonstrates its role as a megadiverse nation with a strong commitment to sustainable environmental protection.

By planting hundreds of endemic seedlings at TMII, the government hopes to accelerate ecological recovery, especially in urban areas facing increasingly complex environmental pressures. The program also reinforces a culture of cross-sector collaboration to ensure better environmental quality for future generations. (*)
