Mount Gede Pangrango National Park Closed for Hikers’ Safety

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Following volcanic earthquake activity at the crater of Mount Gede on April 1, 2025, the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park Authority (TNGP) officially closed the hiking trails to Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango from April 3 to 7, 2025. This decision is based on a circular issued by the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Although there has been no increase in volcanic activity, this preventive measure is being taken to ensure the safety of hikers.

Head of the TNGP Office, Adhi Nurul Hadi, stated that the hiking trails would be reopened after April 7, 2025, provided that volcanic activity at Mount Gede is confirmed to be stable.

“We are temporarily closing the hiking trails for the safety of hikers. If the conditions are truly safe and there is no increase in volcanic activity, the trails will be reopened,” he said on Sunday, April 6, 2025. He explained that an eruption had occurred at the Mount Gede crater, along with volcanic gas emissions that could endanger visitors near the crater area.

“This information is the basis for our decision, and the closure refers to regulations outlined in Government Regulation Number 8 of 2011, which provides guidelines for closing all or part of an area in the event of a hazardous situation,” he said.

He emphasized that this decision aligns with the Decree of the Minister of Forestry. “The bottom line is, there is no compromise when it comes to visitor safety,” he said. “Monitoring is also ongoing through the Mount Gede Pangrango observation post regarding the volcano’s activity,” he added.
