Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, underscored the urgency of comprehensive waste management reform in North Jakarta, citing daily waste generation exceeding 1,300 tonnes and calling for the area to serve as a national model for sustainable waste management.
The statement was delivered during a series of activities marking National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2026 and the Indonesia Safe, Healthy, Clean and Beautiful (ASRI) Movement. Accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Environment and Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH), the Minister led a clean-up action at the Nizam Zachman Fishing Port and the Penjaringan Fish Auction Site, involving the North Jakarta Municipal Government and local communities.
Minister Hanif emphasised that waste reduction must begin at the source and requires strong public participation. He noted that North Jakarta’s high waste volume demands special attention from both authorities and residents to ensure proper waste segregation and management at the household and community levels.
As part of the visit, the Minister also inspected community-based waste management initiatives, including the Women Federation Waste Bank Unit on Marliana Street and the MOA TPS3R facility in Penjaringan. These facilities were highlighted as examples of inclusive waste management practices that actively engage communities in waste sorting and processing.
The Minister further acknowledged the role of the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) facility in Rorotan as a strategic solution to accelerate waste handling in North Jakarta. However, he noted that the facility continues to face concerns from nearby communities, stressing the importance of continuous improvement, transparency and stakeholder engagement to ensure its effective and socially acceptable operation.
North Jakarta Mayor Hendra Hidayat expressed full support for the national waste management agenda, affirming the city administration’s commitment to implementing directives issued by the President through the Minister of Environment. He stated that the local government aims to transform North Jakarta into a safe, healthy, clean and liveable city in line with the ASRI Movement.
KLH/BPLH reiterated that waste management requires an integrated approach, combining waste reduction at source, strengthened public awareness, environmentally friendly technologies such as RDF, and consistent law enforcement to safeguard environmental sustainability. (*)
