Perhutani Manages Eco-Friendly Waste in Cikole Lembang

Enviro News Asia, Lembang – Perum Perhutani has been entrusted by 20 other state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to manage the Integrated Waste Management Facility for Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (TPST-3R) built in Perhutani’s tourist area in Cikole, Lembang, West Bandung Regency.

The TPST-3R, which focuses on managing waste from tourist destinations in the Cikole-Jayagiri area of Lembang, West Bandung Regency, was officially inaugurated on Thursday (January 9, 2025).

As the coordinator of the Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program, appointed by 21 SOEs, Perum Perhutani has made an innovative breakthrough amidst the limited capacity of the Sarimukti Final Disposal Site (TPA). They implement effective and sustainable waste management in areas with high tourism potential, such as the Cikole-Jayagiri region of Lembang.

Assistant Deputy for Plantation and Forestry Industries at the Ministry of SOEs, Faturohman, accompanied by Perum Perhutani’s Director of Finance and Risk Management, Sandy Mukhlisin, stated that cleanliness is crucial for ensuring visitor comfort at tourist sites. “Based on our experience in visiting tourist sites, we coordinated with 21 SOEs involved in the TJSL program, successfully raising funds of approximately IDR 1.8 billion,” he said after the inauguration.

The funds were used to build the TPST-3R in the Cikole area, which now successfully processes all waste generated in the tourism area.

Faturohman emphasized that waste management at the Cikole TPST does not only focus on disposal but also on converting waste into economically valuable products, in line with the Circular Economy concept.
“We can see how waste is processed into various useful products, which aligns with the commitment of SOEs to support environmental preservation,” he explained.

The 21 collaborating SOEs in the TPST program include Perum Perhutani, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia, PT Bank Mandiri, PT Bank Negara Indonesia, PT Telkom Indonesia, PT Pegadaian, PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV, PT Bahana Pembinaan Usaha Indonesia, PT Semen Indonesia, PT Garuda Indonesia, PT Jasa Raharja, Perum LPPNPI, PT Hutama Karya, PT Taspen, PT Angkasa Pura II, PT Jaminan Kredit Indonesia, PT Perkebunan Nusantara Indonesia III, PT Asuransi Jasa Indonesia, Perum Bulog, PT Pelabuhan Indonesia, and PT Brantas Abipraya.

Erwin Robiana, Commander of the Lembang Clean Task Force, stated that waste management starts with waste transported from tourist destinations. A disposal fee of IDR 300,000 is charged for each transport. So far, 22 tourist destinations in Cikole, Lembang have committed to sending their waste to the facility. For plastic waste, it is sorted and heated to form reusable materials.

During Christmas and New Year, the TPST-3R Cikole-Jayagiri was used as a trial for waste management. At that time, 12 tons of waste were sent to the facility, which was processed in four days, managing up to 3 tons of waste per day.

The processed waste yields products such as paving blocks, beams, boards, window frames, and roof tiles, which can be marketed to partner tourist destinations. For instance, one cubic meter of processed material, equivalent to 84 boards, can be sold for IDR 3.8 million.

In addition to producing goods, Erwin mentioned that there is also waste processing using eco-enzyme methods, typically involving fruit peels fermented for three months. However, he acknowledged challenges, especially in terms of human resources. More than 30 people are needed for sorting, molding, pressing, liquid fertilizer production, eco-enzyme creation, and other processes.

“We must ensure sustainability, as this can also become a waste education tourism initiative,” he concluded.
