Enviro News Asia, Tokyo – Powerful Typhoon Bavi is expected to approach the Sakishima Islands of Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture, from Friday to Saturday, potentially bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and high waves, the Japan Meteorological Agency said on Monday.
The ninth typhoon of the year was moving west-northwest near the Mariana Islands at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour as of 3 p.m. Monday and is forecast to travel toward the East China Sea.
Typhoon Bavi had a central atmospheric pressure of 910 hectopascals, a maximum sustained wind speed of 55 meters per second, and a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 80 meters per second. Wind speeds of 25 meters per second or more were recorded within approximately 140 kilometers of the typhoon’s center, with speeds of 15 meters per second or more extending to between 140 and 560 kilometers from the center.
