200 Hatchlings Released into the Sea

Enviro News Asia, Gresik — That morning, the sky over Gili Noko shimmered with a golden glow, welcoming the tiny steps of 200 hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) hatchlings as they prepared to journey into the open ocean on Monday (April 28). On the southern shore of this small island located in Sidogedungbatu Village, Sangkapura District, Gresik Regency, East Java, hundreds of eyes witnessed the sacred moment of the hatchlings’ release — a celebration of life and hope.

The event was initiated by the Community Monitoring Group (Pokmaswas) Hijau Daun and the Gili Noko Community Group (Pokmas), with support from PLN Nusantara Power. Also in attendance were representatives from Conservation Resort Area (RKW) 10 Bawean Island and various other agencies.

According to a press release from the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE), a series of speeches preceded the release, emphasizing the importance of protecting Bawean Island’s coast as a natural habitat for turtles. The release took place on the southern side of Gili Noko, an area chosen specifically because it is not on a shipping route, ensuring the hatchlings’ safety as they make their way to the sea.

The hawksbill turtle is a rare and protected species, currently facing serious threats from poaching and habitat destruction. Conservation efforts like this are crucial to securing their survival.

Although Gili Noko is not an official conservation area, it has become an important site for turtle nesting and hatching. The active involvement of the local community in conservation efforts demonstrates that preserving nature is not only the government’s responsibility, but also that of local communities.

As the hatchlings disappeared into the waves, hope grew — that one day, they would return to this beach to continue the cycle of life. With the hope that future generations will continue to protect this natural heritage with wholehearted dedication.
