Indonesia Brings Independence Spirit and Solidarity for East Nusa Tenggara to BRICS Environmental Forum

Enviro News Asia, New Delhi — Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Moh Jumhur Hidayat, participated in the Indonesian Independence Day flag-raising ceremony in New Delhi, India, bringing the spirit of independence from Indonesia to the international environmental diplomacy arena.

The ceremony took place alongside Minister Jumhur’s official agenda to attend the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting, scheduled for August 18, 2026. The Independence Day commemoration provided an opportunity for Indonesia to reaffirm the values of sovereignty, self-reliance, and national solidarity in the context of international environmental cooperation.

During the commemoration, Minister Jumhur also called on Indonesians to extend their concern and solidarity to communities affected by the earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on August 15, 2026. He expressed his condolences to those affected and reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Control Agency to contribute to post-disaster recovery within their respective mandates.

Indonesia’s solidarity agenda is also aligned with its participation in BRICS, where the Indonesian delegation is expected to promote stronger and more concrete cooperation among developing countries. Indonesia views global challenges—including climate change, environmental degradation, transboundary pollution, and biodiversity loss—as issues that require strong solidarity and collective solutions that are fair to developing nations.

The Indonesian government considers environmental protection and sustainable resource management essential pillars of national development and competitiveness in the global arena. Sustainable natural resource management, the acceleration of the green economic transition, the development of renewable energy, and stronger national climate resilience remain key foundations for achieving resilient and sustainable economic growth.

Indonesia’s active participation in the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting also reflects its intention to play a more active role in shaping international environmental cooperation. Rather than remaining a passive recipient of global policies, Indonesia seeks to contribute to international solutions, help shape cooperation frameworks, and ensure that national interests and the priorities of developing countries are adequately represented in the global environmental agenda.

By bringing the spirit of independence to New Delhi, Indonesia is reaffirming that national sovereignty is reflected not only in economic resilience, but also in solidarity with fellow citizens and a shared commitment to protecting the planet. The country’s concern for communities recovering from the disaster in East Nusa Tenggara demonstrates that patriotism can go hand in hand with humanitarian solidarity and global environmental responsibility.
