Ethiopia Launches NDC 3.0 at ACS2

Enviro News Asia, Addis Ababa – The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia officially launched its third-generation Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), covering the period from 2025 to 2035, at the Second Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Ethiopia’s NDC 3.0 targets a conditional 70.3% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 compared to a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, up from 68.8% in the previous update, along with an unconditional reduction of 30.7%.

The launch was led by H.E. Seyoum Mekonen, State Minister at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Planning and Development, who underscored Ethiopia’s ambition and commitment to climate action:

“Ethiopia’s Enhanced NDC3 is a call to action, our commitment to transform climate vulnerabilities into drivers of sustainable growth. With initiatives such as the Green Legacy and the GERD Dam generating over 5,250 megawatts of clean energy, we are building resilience while advancing prosperity. We have pledged USD 22.13 billion through domestic efforts and call on partners to help mobilize the additional resources needed. Together, we can ensure Ethiopia’s fair contribution to global climate goals and a resilient future for our people.” – H.E. Seyoum Mekonen, State Minister, Ministry of Planning and Development, Ethiopia

Global leaders and partners, including Melanie Robinson, Global Director for Climate, Economics, and Finance at the World Resources Institute; Axel van Trotsenburg, Managing Director of the World Bank; Dr. Pablo Vieira, Global Director of the NDC Partnership; and Paul Martin, Manager for Environment Operations in Eastern and Southern Africa at the World Bank, praised Ethiopia’s bold and ambitious climate leadership.

This commitment reaffirms Ethiopia’s determination to lead in mitigation, adaptation, resilience, and just transitions while calling for fair climate finance, technology transfer, and partnerships to turn ambition into action. (*)
