Indonesia Prepares New Carbon Registry System to Accelerate Carbon Market Development

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Ministry of Environment and Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) is finalizing a new carbon registry system, Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK), which is targeted to be operational by July 2026 to support the acceleration of carbon trading in Indonesia.

Vice Minister Diaz Hendropriyono announced that project developers are invited to participate in a trial phase by submitting their project design documents (PDD) into the system. The trial aims to ensure a smooth launch and readiness of the platform once fully implemented.

Speaking at the Indonesia Carbon Market Outlook 2026, Diaz emphasized that carbon trading plays a crucial role in addressing the global climate finance gap. He noted that the world requires approximately USD 8.6 trillion annually for climate mitigation efforts until 2030, while current funding remains significantly lower.

In Indonesia, the funding gap is also substantial, with an estimated need of Rp470 trillion per year, while only around Rp76 trillion is currently available. The development of a robust carbon market is therefore expected to help bridge this gap.

Diaz also highlighted the importance of collaboration, acknowledging support from UK PACT, INDEF, and Eco Securities in advancing Indonesia’s carbon market ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Dominic Jeremy, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Indonesia, expressed support for Indonesia’s carbon market development, highlighting its alignment with bilateral commitments between Indonesia and the UK to strengthen climate cooperation. (*)
