Indonesia Strengthens Subnational Commitment to FOLU Net Sink 2030 in Highland Papua

Enviro News Asia, Wamena — The Kementerian Kehutanan, in collaboration with the Highland Papua Provincial Government, held a socialization and workshop to develop the subnational work plan for FOLU Net Sink 2030 in Papua Pegunungan on April 21–22, 2026.

The event marked a key milestone in completing the preparation of subnational work plans across all provinces in Indonesia, with Highland Papua being the final province to initiate the process.

Haruni Krisnawati, Senior Advisor to the Minister of Forestry on Climate Change and Daily Chair of the FOLU Net Sink 2030 Operational Management Office, emphasized that the workshop serves as a strategic platform to align Indonesia’s national climate commitments with concrete actions at the regional level.

She highlighted that Indonesia’s climate commitments have been strengthened since the ratification of the Paris Agreement in 2016, which includes targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent independently and up to 41 percent with international support by 2030.

Meanwhile, Highland Papua Regional Secretary Wasuok Demianus Siep stated that the province holds significant potential to contribute to national emission reduction targets due to its extensive and relatively well-preserved forest areas.

The workshop also addressed key regional priorities, including strengthening forest management institutions, preventing forest and land fires, conserving protected areas, rehabilitating degraded land, promoting non-timber forest products, enhancing community capacity, and reinforcing the role of forest rangers and community-based fire groups.

The event brought together stakeholders from regional government agencies, technical units of the Ministry of Forestry, academics, indigenous community leaders, and other partners.

Through this initiative, the government aims to enhance local understanding and participation in the FOLU Net Sink 2030 agenda, ensuring that environmental sustainability efforts are aligned with community welfare and long-term economic resilience. (*)
