COP 16 UNCCD in Saudi Arabia Discusses Key Issues

Enviro News, Riyadh – Various critical issues were addressed at the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from December 2–13, 2024. Themed “Our Land Our Future,” this event is the largest in UNCCD’s history, with participation from 197 parties, including member states and the European Union.

Key discussions focused on land degradation, drought, and climate change. One central topic was land restoration and drought resilience, which highlighted efforts to accelerate the recovery of 1.5 billion hectares of degraded land by 2030. This initiative aims to achieve land degradation neutrality and ensure sustainability for future generations.

Other discussions included food, water, and energy security, particularly relevant to the Middle East, one of the regions most vulnerable to drought and food system sustainability challenges.

The conference emphasized science- and technology-based land management, underscoring the importance of evidence-driven solutions and decision-making regarding land degradation.

Additionally, multisectoral collaboration was a focal point, involving governments, private sectors, academics, and civil society working together to combat desertification and drought. Another significant issue was gender equality and the active participation of local communities in land restoration and drought management efforts.

COP16 is expected to be a pivotal milestone in accelerating global action toward environmental sustainability and improving the livelihoods of those dependent on land resources. Saudi Arabia used this platform to enhance its role in global environmental issues, aligning with its ambitious plans for sustainable development and energy transition.
