Enviro News Asia, Lampung — Way Kambas National Park recorded the birth of a female Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) calf on Wednesday, 4 December 2025, at 23:25 WIB. The calf was born to Yulia, a 12-year-old elephant experiencing her first delivery.
Head of Way Kambas National Park, MDH Zaidi, confirmed that both the calf and the mother remain in good condition. He reported that the newborn stood and walked independently at 02:05 WIB. He also stated that the calf showed active behavior and began attempting to nurse early in the morning. Based on initial measurements of height and body circumference, the calf is estimated to weigh 64 kilograms.
The birth marks a positive development for ongoing Sumatran elephant conservation efforts. Yulia’s first offspring adds renewed optimism for sustaining elephant populations within the Way Kambas conservation landscape.
The Ministry of Forestry welcomed the report and reiterated its commitment to strengthening conservation programs for the Sumatran elephant, a species considered a national pride. (*)
