Indonesia Opens Global Carbon Summit 2025 to Advance Nature-Based Carbon Markets

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Vice Minister of Forestry Rohmat Marzuki inaugurated the Global Carbon Summit Indonesia 2025 in Jakarta on Wednesday, 26 November 2025. The forum, the first of its kind in Indonesia, brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and international partners to discuss the future of carbon markets and the green economy.

In his opening address, Vice Minister Marzuki expressed appreciation to Ecobiz Asia and the Indonesian Forestry Entrepreneurs Association (APHI) for organizing what he described as a highly strategic event. He stated that the commitment demonstrated by participants strengthens confidence that meaningful climate progress is within reach when stakeholders work with focus, integrity, and shared goals.

He emphasized that Indonesia has reinforced its carbon market framework through Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025, enabling the trading of carbon units from Nature-based Solutions (NbS), including reforestation, mangrove restoration, and agroforestry. The Ministry of Forestry is also harmonizing several regulations related to forest governance, social forestry, and environmental services in conservation areas to ensure smooth implementation of the carbon market.

Vice Minister Marzuki outlined Indonesia’s vast economic potential in NbS-based carbon initiatives. Of 48.69 million hectares of NbS areas, 12 million hectares are designated for ARR (Afforestation, Reforestation, Revegetation), 8.3 million hectares for social forestry, and 1.4 million hectares targeted for customary forest recognition. BloombergNEF projects that Indonesia’s forestry sector could generate up to 13.4 billion tons of CO₂e in carbon credits by 2050. He affirmed that such potential positions Indonesia as one of the world’s most sought-after sources of NbS carbon credits.

The Vice Minister also highlighted Indonesia’s strengthened international cooperation, including recent MoUs with the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). He noted that these collaborations are crucial to enhancing standards, technical capacities, and Indonesia’s integration with the global carbon market.

Vice Minister Marzuki concluded by expressing confidence that Indonesia is moving toward a world-class carbon market ecosystem. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a carbon market that is transparent, high-integrity, and delivers tangible benefits for communities, forests, and the planet. (*)
