Indonesia – UK Strengthen Climate Action Commitment

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The Minister of Environment / Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, met with the UK’s Minister for Climate, Kerry McCarthy. The two discussed various strategic issues including climate change, energy transition, and sustainable development.

Regarding climate change, Indonesia and the UK reinforced their commitment to ensuring that global temperature rise does not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius, as stated in the Paris Agreement. “We are working towards achieving net zero emissions by 2060 or earlier,” Hanif said in a written statement on Friday (April 18, 2025).

The meeting also resulted in an agreement to hold further discussions on the High Integrity Carbon Market Opportunity, scheduled for May 2025.

Indonesia emphasized the importance of strengthening the national carbon market through the Indonesian Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificate (SPEI), as well as the development of a credible and transparent national registry system. Meanwhile, the UK, through the UK PACT program, expressed support in the form of €2.8 million in funding over the next three years to accelerate the development of Indonesia’s carbon trading roadmap.

In addition to climate issues, plastic waste management was another key agenda item. Indonesia is facing challenges with the increasing volume of plastic waste in rivers, beaches, and oceans, particularly in tourist areas such as Bali. The UK has expressed its support for the revision of Indonesia’s National Action Plan on Plastic Pollution through a partnership with the World Bank, as well as strengthening the Indonesia National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) platform to comprehensively address this issue.
