Enviro News Asia, Surabaya — Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya officially inaugurated its Central Temporary Storage Facility (TPS) for Hazardous and Toxic Waste (B3) on Friday (July 25, 2025).
This initiative positions ITS as a model campus in hazardous waste management, in accordance with environmental management standards.
ITS Rector Prof. Ir. Bambang Pramujati, ST., MScEng., Ph.D., stated that the establishment of the B3 Waste TPS is a strategic step by ITS to support responsible and sustainable campus environmental management.
Hazardous and toxic waste is a serious environmental challenge that must not be underestimated. “If not managed properly, the impact can be severe on human health and environmental sustainability,” he said in an official statement on Friday.
Therefore, continued the ITS Professor of Mechanical Engineering, the development and operation of this new facility reflects ITS’s commitment to upholding the principles of good university governance — not only in academics and administration, but also in occupational safety and environmental sustainability.
Bambang expressed confidence that the facility would further strengthen ITS’s position as a campus that excels not only in technological innovation, but also in environmental responsibility.
“This proves that ITS is committed to protecting the environment and securing a better future for the next generation,” emphasized the 13th Rector of ITS.
In her report, Dr. Any Werdhiastutie, ST., M.Si., Head of ITS’s Bureau of General Affairs and Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment (BUK4L), which oversees the facility, explained that each university, including ITS, must have only one official B3 Waste TPS.
According to Any, the establishment of the B3 Waste TPS is also one of the requirements for obtaining international accreditation.
Therefore, departments within ITS seeking international accreditation can now point to the existence of the centralized B3 Waste TPS to support their evaluations. “God willing, starting August 1, 2025, we (ITS Central B3 Waste TPS) will be ready to receive waste from the respective departments,” she said.
