BRIN Advances Hydrogen Technology to Support Indonesia’s Energy Independence

Enviro News Asia, South Tanggerang — National Research and Innovation Agency(BRIN) is accelerating the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technology as part of efforts to strengthen national energy independence and support the transition to clean energy.

The innovation was presented at the Lab Indonesia 2026 exhibition held at Indonesia Convention Exhibition BSD City, where BRIN highlighted its commitment to sustainable and globally competitive energy solutions.

Researcher Yurian Ariandi Andrameda explained that the technology focuses on water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen, which can be stored and converted into electricity through fuel cell systems, including for electric vehicles.

“Hydrogen technology is a key priority in supporting the clean energy transition. We continue to improve efficiency and real-world applications,” he said.

Indonesia holds strong potential in this sector due to abundant water resources and the availability of supporting materials such as nickel, manganese, carbon, graphite, and rare earth metals, enabling the development of a self-sufficient hydrogen ecosystem.

In 2026, BRIN is focusing on improving efficiency through catalyst innovation to accelerate the electrolysis process. The agency is also developing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) derived from palm oil waste as part of broader renewable energy diversification.

BRIN is strengthening international collaboration with countries such as Japan and South Korea, alongside partnerships with universities and global research institutions.

Meanwhile, Ratno Nuryadi noted that Lab Indonesia 2026 serves as a strategic platform connecting industry players and researchers, fostering innovation and business-to-business collaboration in the research sector.

The initiative is expected to enhance Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global clean energy landscape while delivering tangible benefits to society. (*)
