Indonesia Strengthens Regional Cooperation to Accelerate ASEAN’s Clean Energy Transition

Enviro News Asia, Kuala Lumpur — Indonesia reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing clean energy transition across the ASEAN region, emphasizing collaborative action and regulatory reform to attract sustainable investments. Speaking at the 2nd Tripartite Forum of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Eddy Soeparno underscored President Prabowo Subianto’s administration’s priority to accelerate the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

The forum, themed “Powering Progress: How Investments, Policies, and Regulations Shape the Energy Future,” brought together parliamentary leaders from ASEAN countries to discuss joint strategies in achieving a low-carbon future.

Eddy explained that Indonesia’s Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) 2025–2034 targets the development of 69.5 GW of new power generation capacity, of which 53 GW will come from renewable energy sources, including battery energy storage systems.

“President Prabowo is committed to strengthening renewable energy as part of Indonesia’s roadmap toward Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or sooner,” said Eddy. “We aim to achieve 8% economic growth while ensuring energy security and sustainability through the efficient use of our natural resources.”

Eddy also invited ASEAN parliaments to strengthen intergovernmental cooperation and align energy transition policies to boost investment across the region. According to him, Indonesia is implementing deregulation measures and structural reforms to improve the investment climate for renewable projects.

He cited the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 109, which streamlines waste-to-energy projects, and Presidential Regulation No. 110, which establishes a national carbon market framework as part of Indonesia’s green economic agenda.

“Indonesia welcomes ASEAN collaboration to accelerate renewable energy deployment, build sustainable financing ecosystems, and promote regional resilience,” Eddy concluded. (*)
