Pertamina Expands Clean Energy Ecosystem Through Low-Carbon Hydrogen from Waste

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – PT Pertamina (Persero) has strengthened its commitment to Indonesia’s clean energy transition by signing a strategic cooperation agreement with the West Java Provincial Government to develop low-carbon hydrogen, biomethane, and biofuel from municipal waste.

The agreement, signed in Bandung on July 29, marks a major step toward building an integrated hydrogen ecosystem while addressing waste management challenges and accelerating renewable energy development in West Java.

Pertamina’s Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development, Emma Sri Martini, said one of the collaboration’s key initiatives is utilizing methane generated from waste at the Sarimukti landfill in West Bandung Regency. The methane will be purified into biomethane before being processed into low-carbon hydrogen as part of a broader waste-to-energy ecosystem.

Emma explained that the project will be implemented through collaboration between Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (PNRE) and Pertamina Gas, with each entity responsible for different stages of the value chain, including feedstock supply, processing, infrastructure development, distribution, and commercialization.

She added that the initiative also involves international partners, including Hyundai of South Korea, to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon energy technologies.

According to Emma, the project is expected to serve as a pilot model for Indonesia’s hydrogen ecosystem and could be replicated in other regions if successfully implemented. She also emphasized that the collaboration reflects Pertamina’s commitment to environmental protection, community development, and sustainable development.

During the same event, the West Java Provincial Government launched the groundbreaking of the Legok Nangka Waste-to-Energy Plant (PSEL), which is designed to process approximately 2,000 tons of waste per day into 40 megawatts (MW) of electricity while supporting hydrogen and biomethane production.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung said the facility is expected to begin operations in 2029. Besides producing renewable electricity, the project is projected to create around 1,500 jobs and promote a circular economy by converting waste into clean energy and renewable fuels.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi stated that the Legok Nangka project will strengthen the province’s position as one of Indonesia’s leading clean energy hubs. He added that similar waste-to-energy facilities are planned for other areas across West Java to improve waste management and increase renewable energy production. (*)
