PLN and Trade Ministry Collaborate to Launch Ultra Fast EV Charging Station

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – PT PLN (Persero) in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia has inaugurated an ultra fast charging Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station (SPKLU) at the ministry’s office complex in Jakarta on Thursday (March 5). The initiative marks a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the development of Indonesia’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem while expanding charging infrastructure in public spaces, particularly within government institutions.

The inauguration was attended by Minister of Trade Budi Santoso, who expressed appreciation for PLN’s swift response in providing EV charging facilities to support the growing number of electric vehicle users in Indonesia.

According to Santoso, the increasing adoption of EVs requires a broader and more accessible charging infrastructure, including within government office environments. He added that the charging station at the Ministry of Trade is not limited to ministry employees but is also accessible to the public and passing EV users.

Santoso further revealed that the adoption of electric vehicles among ministry staff has been steadily increasing, with approximately 15 percent of employees now using EVs. He emphasized that the expansion of SPKLU infrastructure across various locations would further encourage public confidence in transitioning to electric vehicles.

“Previously, many people hesitated to use electric vehicles due to limited charging facilities. However, with more SPKLU stations now available, charging has become easier and more convenient. The charging process here takes around 30 minutes,” Santoso stated.

Since its trial operation began in December 2025, the SPKLU facility at the ministry has recorded a steady rise in usage. As of February 2026, the three charging units—each with a capacity of 120 kilowatts (kW)—have facilitated 2,460 charging transactions, delivering a total of 62,598 kW of electricity.

President Director of PLN Darmawan Prasodjo highlighted that the collaboration represents an important step in supporting Indonesia’s broader energy transition agenda. He noted that the expansion of EV infrastructure contributes to shifting from high-emission energy sources to lower-emission alternatives, as well as from import-based energy to domestically sourced energy.

Prasodjo also emphasized that the development of SPKLU infrastructure cannot rely solely on land owned by PLN. Therefore, partnerships with various stakeholders—including government institutions, hospitals, shopping centers, banking offices, and other public facilities—are essential to accelerate the expansion of EV charging networks across the country.

Looking ahead, PLN and the government aim to create a conducive investment ecosystem that will attract broader participation, including from private sector players, in the development of EV charging infrastructure. Such collaboration is expected to ensure the sustainable and rapid growth of Indonesia’s electric vehicle ecosystem. (*)
