Singapore and Sweden Advance Joint Efforts on Clean Energy and Regional Grid Connectivity

Enviro News Asia, Singapore — Singapore and Sweden strengthened bilateral cooperation on clean energy and regional power interconnectivity during the inaugural Singapore–Sweden Forum held on 30 October 2025. The event, organised by Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) alongside the 18th Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), marked a key milestone in the countries’ expanding energy partnership.

The forum built on the Memorandum of Understanding on Energy Cooperation signed during the state visit of King Carl XVI Gustaf in November 2024. Several high-level exchanges followed in 2025, laying the groundwork for deeper collaboration in clean energy technologies and cross-border electricity systems.

Energy leaders from both nations discussed hydrogen and alternative clean fuels, smart-grid development, energy efficiency, cross-border power links, and emerging energy innovations. Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry, Ebba Busch, delivered a keynote address highlighting the central role of technological innovation in accelerating global energy transition efforts. She reaffirmed Sweden’s interest in expanding engagement with partners in Asia.

Busch noted that Sweden’s energy and industrial strategy integrates competitiveness with climate ambition and focuses on practical pathways for innovation, digitalisation, and nuclear technology development. She emphasized that close cooperation with regional partners can reinforce energy security and facilitate a stable global energy system.

Singapore and Sweden agreed on the need to enhance multilateral and multidirectional electricity trading to strengthen regional resilience. The two sides also committed to cooperation on High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems and the development of transmission infrastructure—both overland and subsea—to support the ASEAN Power Grid (APG). They expressed interest in advancing knowledge exchange on nuclear technologies and safety, expanding collaboration through SIEW and other multilateral platforms, and exploring clean-fuel pathways such as hydrogen and ammonia.

EMA Chief Executive Puah Kok Keong welcomed the growing partnership and ongoing technical exchanges. He said the collaboration will support progress toward the ASEAN Power Grid and stimulate new opportunities for the energy transition, adding that EMA looks forward to strengthening the partnership to achieve a sustainable and secure energy future.
