President Prabowo Reaffirms Indonesia’s Commitment to Energy Independence and Clean Energy Transition

Enviro News Asia, Magelang — President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to achieving national energy independence by accelerating the transition toward clean and renewable energy, during the inauguration of an electric commercial vehicle assembly plant operated by PT VKTR Sakti Industries in Magelang, Central Java.

Speaking at the event, the President emphasized that energy is one of the most strategic sectors for national survival, alongside food security. He stressed that Indonesia must achieve self-sufficiency in energy to remain resilient and sovereign amid global uncertainties.

Prabowo highlighted that Indonesia possesses abundant energy resources, but underlined the importance of managing them wisely with a focus on efficiency and sustainability. As part of the national strategy, the government is prioritizing the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels by promoting electrification and expanding the use of renewable energy sources.

He noted that shifting toward electricity-based energy systems is a key step to reduce reliance on carbon-intensive fuels. The government is also planning to significantly expand national power generation capacity, targeting up to 100 gigawatts within a relatively short timeframe.

In addition, the President announced a gradual phase-out of diesel power plants (PLTD), which is expected to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 200,000 barrels per day. This measure could cut Indonesia’s fuel imports by around 20 percent, given the current import level of approximately one million barrels per day.

Prabowo further stated that these efforts could enable Indonesia to significantly reduce, or even eliminate, its dependence on fuel imports in the coming years. The government is also promoting the development of alternative fuels derived from domestic resources, including palm oil and used cooking oil, for environmentally friendly aviation fuel and other applications.

The President expressed optimism that with consistent and strategic implementation, Indonesia can achieve energy independence while strengthening national resilience in the face of global challenges. (*)
